Unlocking And Optimizing Students' Unique Potenetial
Stellenbosch University Letter of Referral

Dear André
Herewith we would like to give you preliminary feedback on the use of the Integrated Learning Profile (ILP) – Neuro-Link at the Centre of Student Counselling and Development (CSCD), Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
The Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD), Stellenbosh University, focuses on unlocking and optimizing students’ unique potential. We believe that every student has the ability to express their initial potential in the academic learning process. However, to unlock this unique potential, students may need to refine and develop specific academic skills. Our current approach towards co-curricular academic development work consist of workshops as well as individual sessions. In these workshops we expose them to a general skill-set that they can transfer to their daily academic needs. However, in many cases students find it difficult and challanging to select which academic skills may help them to experience academic success in their specific learning contexts. In October 2011 psychologists at the CSCD received comprehensive training in the use of the Integrated Learning Profile (ILP) developed by Neuro-Link.
We are currently using this instrument for the assessment of the individual students’ preferences towards learning. In general based on students’ qualitative feedback (who are clients of the CSCD and who were exposed to the ILP as part of an intervention process), they are benefiting from the tailor-made developmental interventions based on their preferences towards learning(profiles). Not only does this instrument help them to understand why their current skills may not always be sufficient, and therefore need development, but it also helps them to understand the importance of holistic wellness approach for academic success. More specially the information obtained from the ILP is used to help students develop skills that complement their preferences towards learning. The ILP is equips students with knowledge about their learning preferences, it suggests possible developmental areas as well as specific skills for information intake and processing, as well as retraining and retrieving this information based on each students learning profile.
The CSCD is in a process of strategically positioning its services to provide more effectively in the needs of a rapidly changing student community. As part of this strategic process we are planning to focus more on prevention than cure. One of the initiatives is to incorporate the work of Neuro-Link, amongst other, in an extended research program (“A systematic and holistic approach to optimise university student success by means of the out-of-class experience”), where the focus is on the student wellness.
We would also like to thank you for the excellent support rendered by your company and we are looking forward to more collaboration in future.
Yours sincerely,

Elmien Strauss
